Audio 801

Whole-Home and Multi-Room Audio

Music in the kitchen, the primary suite and the patio, on zones you can run separately or together.

The design question is how many zones and where the boundaries fall. A kitchen and a great room that open into each other usually want to be one zone, because two zones playing the same music at slightly different volumes in one open space sounds worse than either alone. A bedroom wants to be its own. The patio almost always wants to be separate, because outdoor listening levels have nothing to do with indoor ones.

Outdoor zones have their own constraints. Speakers meant for outdoor use are built for it, placement has to account for the fact that sound outdoors has nothing to reflect off, and everything has to be sealed properly where it passes through the exterior. Utah winters are hard on anything installed carelessly outside. Ask any installer how they handle penetrations through the envelope, and what happens to the outdoor zone when it is below freezing.
